Overview

The Student Nurse Extern may perform acts that are non-invasive. Student Nurse Extern may also perform additional acts that have been taught in their nursing education program provided they are individually prepared and clinically competent to perform these acts.

Reports to: Appropriate Department Director

*Essential Functions*

Demonstrates competency in performing delegated functions and/or treatments.

Demonstrates ability to identify changes occurring in the patient’s condition and reports these to the appropriate team members.

Demonstrates professional attitude with accountability for role performance.

Performs nursing tech duties under direct supervision of RN with validation of competencies from school checkoff list apart from med administration and IV therapy.

Completion of a unit specific orientation program.

Complete all assigned education in a timely manner.

Maintains hospital and patient confidentiality.

Demonstrates concern for patient welfare by performing activities other than primary needs.

Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately to patients, utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.

Responds promptly to patient requests by answering call lights, greeting patients in a cheerful positive manner, answering questions or fulfilling needs as necessary.

Tidies rooms, make and change bed linens and ensure rooms are clean, neat and orderly. Assists with stocking items in rooms. Sets up oxygen flow meter, humidifier and nasal cannula as requested.

Performs courier duties to the lab and other hospital departments to deliver lab specimens or deliver and retrieval of other requested items.

Transports patients to and from various areas as needed.

Answers phone and greet patients and visitors. Performs other related duties as assigned that will facilitate achievement of quality patient care.

*Non-Essential Functions*

Perform other duties as assigned

Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service, projects and committees as assigned

Adheres to and supports policies and procedures of the STRHS

Works scheduled shifts including overtime, when necessary

Accepts all call schedule as directed

Maintains a neat and professional appearance in compliance to the existing dress code
Must complete all assigned education in a timely manner.

Must complete department specific education.

Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.

*Job Requirements*

*Minimum Education*
High School graduate or equivalent required.
Must show proof of acceptance into a nursing program.
Certified Nurses’ Assistant Certification preferred.

*Required Skills*
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) current or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
Performs clinical skills according to hospital policy and procedures.
Performs technical skills according to hospital policy and procedures.
Documents all necessary and required information per policy and procedure during the performance of usual duties and responsibilities. Must be able to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and co-workers.
